AUG 13,14

Tues August 13

Apparently, wild roses once grew all over the peninsula.  They are quite lovely today too.

We started the day off touring the military WWII artillery installation in the bay.  The Germans were able to sink 23 ships in the St. Lawrence so this deterrent site was activated (they did not sink a single ship/sub.)   It was also a strategic area to harbour fleets, flotillas and supply ships.

Following that, we picked up a couple of grocery items and headed back to camp.

I’ve been hearing dogs howling so I thought.  The park staff said it’s seals and told us how to see them just behind our camp.  She said you can hear them from camp.  I had heard what I thought was a dog howling but realize it was not a neglected dog but seals!

Here's a link to two brief movies of the seals:

At about 6 seconds in you can here the howl of a seal.  From the camp I could hear this and thought it was a dog.

Spot FJ?

Then, with skies changing and rain on and off, we went to the whale watching center and boarded a Zodiac…and finally were fortunate to see a Humpback!

Cold and wet, back home we had chicken soup and fresh baked bread we had bought earlier in the day.  Jerry even got out the buddy heater.

Wed, 14

This will be a long day (probably take 9 hours with stops for, well, you know…sight-seeing etc.  And a scenic drive today, all along the peninsula to Campbellton where we have full hook-ups booked. The batteries were getting pretty low, and 2 hours on the generator just barely gives enough charge for the CPAP unit.

Around 11 a.m., we thought a stop for tea and coffee would be good so we started looking for a cafe.  We spotted the one pictured below called "Cafe du Couleurs" - we figured, from the decoration that it was the Cafe of Colours.  The place seems to specialize in waffles and while we were waiting for our tea and coffee (45 minutes!) we saw the huge plates full of waffles, fruit, cream and syrup!  Since it took so long we should have just had the waffles for lunch.

We had a beautiful drive of 350 km along the very scenic coast ... but touristy in spots.  This side of the Gaspe Peninsula is not so quaint but OH! the views.  We could spend days travelling here.  We were on the road 9 hours as it was... a long day, and a time zone change.  We also made a visit to a great strawberry farm and bought desert!  Yum.
